Project Overview

The South African Whale Centre in Hermanus is set to become an international destination for eco-tourism. A centre focused on research and exploration, providing an immersive interactive experience, it will be a fusion of a traditional natural history museum, an art gallery, a science centre and a research laboratory. Hermanus will become part of a growing network of global destinations addressing issues surrounding the environment, ecology and our fragile ecosystems.

Through research—led by the University of Pretoria’s Whale Unit—and education, in the form of exhibits and interactive displays, this center drives vital conservation efforts. Its success and capacity for protection are amplified by your participation and financial support. Enabling us to ultimately give future generations the opportunity to observe and interact with nature in its intended form.

The building is carefully designed to utilise the limited space in this sensitive heritage zone in the centre of historic Hermanus. The sweeping, curved projection houses the Sky-Skan dome further enhanced by the dramatic whale inspired roof motif. A unique attraction and an exciting learning arena for young and old, combining worlds of science and art.
