Welcome to the

Creating a world-class whale science and education centre in Hermanus to celebrate and protect marine life.

At the South African Whale Centre, our mission is clear: to establish Hermanus as the global heart of whale conservation. Our vision goes beyond just building a museum—it’s about creating a hub for marine education, conservation, and community engagement. We believe in the power of working together to ensure that our oceans, and the majestic creatures within them, thrive for generations to come.

A community united for the Oceans

Our commitment to marine conservation is about action, collaboration, and creating a legacy. We’re building more than a facility; we’re building a movement. Hermanus will be home to a world-renowned centre where education, research, and immersive experiences come together to inspire positive change.

Together, we can create a brighter future for whales and marine life. Join us in protecting our oceans, fostering sustainable practices, and inspiring future generations. The South African Whale Centre isn’t just for us—it’s for all of us.

The new facility will replace the current Whale House Museum building,  which was finalised in 1998 and does not fall under the protection of the Heritage Act as it is not older than 60 years. The De Wet’s Huis building will be retained.

The People Behind SAWC

The South African Whale Centre (SAWC) is a pioneering project shaped by a dedicated team of experts, government officials, and community leaders, all united in their commitment to marine conservation and education.

Leadership and Vision
The SAWC is overseen by the Board of Trustees of the Old Harbour Museum, bringing years of stewardship in heritage preservation to guide this project’s long-term impact on marine education and conservation.

Project Development Team
Our development team includes:

Scientific Expertise
In partnership with Dr. Els Vermeulen from the MRI Whale Unit at the University of Pretoria, the SAWC will drive cutting-edge whale research and conservation efforts, making this centre a hub for marine research and public engagement.

Supported by Key Government Stakeholders
This project enjoys valuable support from local and provincial government officials, including:

  • Provincial Minister of Cultural Affairs and Sport
  • Provincial Minister of Finance and Economic Opportunities

Together, these partners are shaping a world-class destination dedicated to celebrating and protecting South Africa’s rich marine heritage.

The South African Whale Centre (SAWC) will transform the existing Whale Museum (which was built in the 1990s and does not fall under the protection of the Heritage Act) into a state-of-the-art hub for whale science and education, offering an immersive experience that celebrates marine conservation and heritage. Additionally to serve the community, it will also house staff from the Historical Old Fishing Harbour and the Fisherman’s Village, along with the Mammal Research Institute Whale Unit of the University of Pretoria.

The SAWC will feature an expanded exhibition area enveloped by a protective shell, incorporating interactive light, sound, and touch elements. A highlight will be the Sky-Scan Dome, providing a captivating underwater experience. Situated on a historic site shared with the De Wet’s Huis Photo Museum, one of the oldest buildings in Hermanus, the Centre’s architecture respects the area’s heritage while integrating modern functionality.

On the roof level, a terrace with panoramic views will offer a unique venue for events. The organic, set-back roof design—reminiscent of a whale breaching—melds with the landscape, reflecting the SAWC’s mission to unite community, education. conservation, and heritage.
